5 Activities for Educating Your Kid About the Environment

Tuesday, April 19th, 2022

Helping create awareness about the environment is a great way to teach kids about caring for the planet. An excellent time to explore eco-friendly activities is during National Environmental Education Week. This week of celebrating our planet takes place the week of Earth Day, which is April 22nd.

Reading books about the earth, discussing challenges like pollution and endangered species, and performing various science experiments are all great ways to teach kids about the environment. Children learn significantly more when they can engage in hands-on projects and games, so puzzles and similar tasks are also fantastic learning tools.

This Earth Day, set up some easy and fun learning opportunities to teach your kid about caring for the planet. These five ideas for educating kids about the environment are a great place to start.

1. Plant a Garden Together

What better way to teach children about caring for the earth than planting a garden? Kids can learn about the process it takes for flowers and plants to grow and stay healthy. Let kids help from start to finish, ensuring they understand what's necessary to continually care for their garden. It's also a fantastic way to learn about different plant life and how certain types grow better in different conditions.

2. Perform a Classic Experiment

A kid-friendly science experiment is another great way for children to learn about the environment. A classic activity is making a rain gauge. Kids can use the gauge to measure how much rain falls in a certain area.

3. Use STEM-Based Toys and Games to Help Kids Explore the Earth

Many STEM toys are wonderful ways for kids to learn about the earth through science since they offer interactive fun methods. Learn with Ojo's puzzles and games feature STEM topics perfect for teaching kids all sorts of important themes. For example, they can learn about the magnificent world of marine biology with the Underwater Explorers Puzzle in our new puzzle range.

4. Build a Robot from Recyclables

Teach kids about sustainability with this creative art project that uses recyclables and trash to make unique robot creations. It's also an excellent way for kids to develop engineering and problem-solving skills. Gather items like cardboard tubes, boxes, and newspapers, and more. You can also use items like plastic bags and water bottles or anything else that might otherwise end up in a landfill.

5. Visit a Local Nature Center

Many cities have nature centers, parks, or nature trails designed to help people learn about and enjoy nature. These areas typically showcase flora and fauna native to the region and teach visitors about how to protect endangered species. Look for some near you and have a wildlife scavenger hunt that can help kids take a closer look at their surroundings.

Are you ready to celebrate National Environmental Education Week and Earth Day by helping kids become more aware about protecting the planet? These ideas are a great way to spark conversations and interest about the environment. Which one will you try first?
