Making Faces

Communication Icon Favourite Five January

Making Faces is inspired by trendy and imaginative artist Sabine Timm, this activity encourages your child to use objects they find to create original scenes and characters. You only need to use household objects or things found in the garden - it really is this easy to inspire creative development! Not only will your child have creative fun, but Making Faces also allows them to express their emotions through what they make, giving you chance to chat to your son or daughter about different feelings. If you have nowhere to go on a rainy Sunday, this is the perfect activity for family fun.

All you will need to channel your child’s inner artist is lots of random objects! These are something you can accumulate over time, or simply grab from the bottom of the arts and crafts box. Using the objects you’ve collected, create faces which express different emotions. See how many your child can identify, and even try pulling the faces yourself! To get the communication flowing, it’s a good idea to talk to your child about what makes them feel happy, sad, excited etc.

Emotions to try:

Happy

Sad

Angry

Worried

Proud

Disappointed

Scared

Silly

Surprised

If your child has mastered lots of the emotions from their found objects, why don’t you try identifying them out and about? Take a walk and see if you can spot faces around you, for example in houses, cars, doors and trees. Take some pictures on your phone and look through them when you get home - without forgetting to share them with OJO! @learnwithojo
